Parenthèses and Latitude 22N are pleased to present Hong Kong: Between Mountains and Sea, a solo exhibition of drawings paired with written works by French artist Gérard Henry. This presentation is timed to coincide with the launch of Henry’s second book Hong Kong : Entre Montagnes et Mer, published by TANDE&M Editions for the account of Continental Books Limited (ISBN : 978-988-70478-0-3)
“I am simultaneously a stroller, walking back alleys and small streets night and day, a writer, and an artist portraying Hong Kong through my words and drawings. To me, Hong Kong transpires its beauty as much from the inside as from the surface. A city does not exist without living things – living things being people, animals, and plants. They shape this city and give it it’s unique personality.”
A black ink pen and paper always at hand, Gérard Henry explores, observes, and captures the essence of Hong Kong in his intricate, delicate, and highly detailed drawings as well as his writings. Through his compositions he offers us his vision of the city – one that is both poetic and warm.
Gérard Henry is a writer and an art critic who also practices drawing and sketching. What started as a form of meditation quickly became a daily ritual in his life – an avid stroller and a quiet spectator, he puts down on paper illustrated and written reflexions, musings, and contemplations.
In his work he chronicles back alleys, old architecture, houses, flora, fauna, and scenes captured on the fringes of the city he has called home since 1981. He also draws portraits where he reveals the personality of his friends through their home or studio as well as the paraphernalia they surround themselves with – he feels that where a person lives is a projection of their inner self.
Drawing and writing are for him two complementary ways of archiving the city. Most of Henry’s sketches are reflections on Hong Kong’s intangible spirit, its festivals, and its traditions. Drawing Hong Kong is also a way of traveling through the city. He never works after photos; instead, he always draws what he sees and feels on the spot.
“Giacometti once said, “drawing makes me understand things” and I know that to be true. Drawing forces you to observe, to discern, otherwise one would not be able to draw. Whether the result is a masterpiece or not doesn’t matter, the simple action of drawing is a profound experience that expands our understanding of the world around us.”
Hong Kong: Between Mountains and Sea is an exhibition of a curated selection of Henry’s drawings coupled with excerpts from his new book. Presented like a visual diary, they reflect his involvement in the art scene and strong connection to the city – a real testament to his deep affection for Hong Kong. As viewers we get to embark on an intimate journey of Hong Kong seen through Henry’s eyes and fall in love, repeatedly, with this beautiful city.
This exhibition is an Associated Programme of Le French May Arts Festival 2024
Books and prints by the artist will be available for purchase throughout the exhibition.

We are proud to be a part of Mixed Colours: rebirth, an exhibition put together in the benefit of Children of the Mekong.
MIX COLOURS: REBIRTH is a cross-cultural art exhibition featuring 22 international artists and curated by Marie-Florence Gros (La Galerie Paris 1839) and Christel Villepelet.
MIX COLOURS: REBIRTH is a burst of colours to celebrate the energy of life, the power of diversity and natural beauty, and to highlight the links between cultures.
Wrecked on our island, or stuck elsewhere, forbidden to travel, we have cherished even more the vivid beauty around us. While pollution, globalization, threaten to fade the world’s colours and contrasts, while unexpected new threats have changed our perspectives, this exhibition enhances colours as symbols of the natural and cultural diversity to save, the original beauty to admire, the source of rebirth: a positive and energetic sight to create tomorrow’s world.

Photography Exhibition by Marc Progin at Latitude 22N
“The Spatial Odyssey Back in Times”
A land and cosmic journey through the ages of Central Asia history
A photography exhibition by Marc Progin
Swiss photographer, writer and adventurer Marc Progin is back from the wilderness of Mongolia to present “The Spatial Odyssey Back in Times” a land and cosmic journey through the ages of Central Asia history.
His new photo exhibition will tell us of an extraordinary expedition which idea, goal and plan were to travel back in times with a camel caravan in search of ancient civilisations, empires and cultures while trying to discover anthropomorphic statues, tumuli, tombs, megaliths, grave steles, deer stones, petroglyphs and other remains dating back millenniums. An adventure on land and an ascent of eras of 20 millennia from the contemporary to the Paleolithic ages.
To travel back in time and to make the plan adapted to prehistoric conditions he lead his caravan of camels, in the dead of winter, to face snow, ice and blizzard representing the late Würm glaciation period dating back 12000 BC. While the day long camel treks were the time of the site discoveries he journeyed through the ages, at night, at temperatures dropping as low as 30 to – 50, to take photographs of the stone treasures he had found with the planet of the cosmos as for background. To survive the quite particular and harsh conditions lasting several months and spanning 18000 years he travelled with a complete yurt which, with 4 mongol nomads, he had to assemble every night, dismantle in the morning then load onto 4 of the 10 camels. They were Bactrian camels, the only breed who could bear such a journey, carrying 700 kg. of gear, including the yurt, a stove, frozen food, ice packed in bags to make water, firewood, cooking equipment and much else including the elderly foreigner…So no cycling this time. No running either. No gimmicks, nor gadjets such as jeep, a tracked vehicule, no support of any sort, not even a GPS. Only a compass with maps, a thermos and some modern antibiotics just in case. That’s the way true men used to live in with nature and abide by its laws. The itinerary crossed the deserts, mountains, rivers and lakes of western Mongolia at an altitude between 1800 to 2900 m., then moved on further up on the Altaï plateau to reach, at 3500 m. the late Paleolithic ages where prehistoric men left here and there, over millenia, material representations of other worlds. Stones of strange shapes, carved and chiselled of their rites and cults devoted to nature, animals and spirits as well as thousands of petroglyphs representing the daily life of our ancestors.
All together a wintry and cosmic migration as much on earth as in times past, and a spatial exploration of an open-air museum of human and natural history that nowadays only visit, its climate being so harsh, bad weather, wolves and birds of prey, as well as Mongol clans living there as nomads, migrating freely from the present to the past, slowly drifting with the progress of their caravans.
A HK permanent resident for 40 years, Marc Progin, is a Swiss watchmaker…retired from time, and a specialist of Mongolia.
With “Vastness, Magnificence and Simplicity” in 2006, “Nomads, Caravans and Migrations” in 2013, he introduced with his photos and conferences the natural world of Mongolia to Hong Kong.

Fragment(s) vase B takes part in the M+’s debut design exhibition – Shifting Objectives: Design from the M+ Collection – from 30 Nov 2016 to 5 Feb 2017.
M+’s debut design exhibition – Shifting Objectives: Design from the M+ Collection – explores the many concepts and frameworks that have shaped and broadened our understanding of design. Featuring dozens of key objects and works – from mid-twentieth century Japanese furniture, to familiar products from Hong Kong’s manufacturing heyday, to drones, ‘copied’ goods, and digitally-enabled and open-source practices – this groundbreaking show illustrates how design philosophies and practices have changed from the post-Second World War period until now. In so doing, Shifting Objectives outlines the growing contours of the M+ design collection, which is the first of its kind in Asia and a core pillar of M+.
A series of programmes—including workshops, talks, a studio visit, a teachers’ private view, and guided tours for the public, schools, and visitors with specific needs—accompany the exhibition.
In the run up to the opening of the M+ building in 2019, the M+ Pavilion functions as a temporary home for M+ exhibitions and events.

THE PROJECT
Following a one week trip in the South East of China to discover its immense wholesale market and manufacturing centre, students of ECAL‘s Product Design Master program were asked to sketch and portray the many places they visited throughout their journey, capturing moments and casting a fresh look on China’s industry and everyday life.
MORE ON THE PROJECT
The majority of products we use in everyday life are manufactured in China, more specifically in the South Eastern provinces Guangdong. In this densely populated region, whole cities specialize in mass manufacturing home appliances, electronic devices, lighting or furniture.
A product designer today, wether as an entrepreneur or as a member of a larger organization, is certain to have some of its designs produced in China. But most occidental designers don’t have a faint idea where and how objects are eventually produced.
This trip brought the students of ECAL’s Product Design Master program to the South East of China to discover this immense wholesale market and manufacturing centre. Throughout their wanderings, students were asked to sketch and portray their journey, capturing moments and casting a fresh look on China’s industry and everyday life.
