The Night Market
Give a touch of lightheartedness to the table with the whimsical The Night Market dinnerware collection. Inspired by the vibrant and chaotic atmosphere of Chinese street markets, the patterns adorning the plates, bowls, spoons and small dishes of this collection are filled with humor – watch how the traditional classic blue and white “chinoiserie” patterns mingle with scooters, flip flops, fleets of TV antennas or how chopsticks knit noodles over bowls of soup with exploding rice cookers. With a variety of shapes and patterns in each set, have fun, mix and match and bring an unexpected twist to the everyday table.

Obsessions
This series started between 2020 and 2021 as a release from growing obsessions that arised during lockdowns – namely cleaning and cooking. Julie Progin now continues to create more work for Latitude 22N, drawing from her fixation on patterns to create highly detailed drawings and grow the Obsessions series. These intricate illustrations take their cue from densely decorated Famille Rose Mille Fleurs enameled vases.

WATERMELON | This fifth illustration in the ‘Obsessions’ series by Julie Progin for Latitude 22N is named after the iconic watermelon ball which is now part of the M+ museum collection.
More than just a toy, the ball is a symbol of Hong Kong’s industrial past as one of the world’s leading plastic toy manufacturers. It has brought joy to children in Hong Kong since the late 1950’s.
Modern versions of the ball can still be found at many local shops bundled up in nets suspended from the ceilings forming beautiful and distinctive red and white bouquet-like patterns that inspired Julie for this drawing.
To create the intricate and excessive ‘Obsessions’ series Julie Progin brought together diverse references including the excessively meticulous traditional Chinese patterns known as wan hua dui (ten thousand flowers piled up or Mille Fleurs) that can be found painted on the surface of porcelain vessels, as well as designs and systems present in Hong Kong’s landscape.

Between mountains and sea
“After months at sea
Ships leave behind the high seas
And at last, they catch a glimpse
Of this strange and faraway city,
Crouched like a giant spider
Atop the vast and infinite black expanse of the sea.
A city that rises at the tip of the mainland
At the forefront of high seas,
Clutching in its many legs
A network of scintillating islands.”
Last day to visit the exhibition of Gérard Henry in our studio!
Come say hello and be inspired by his intricate and poetic black and white drawings.
Hong Kong: between mountains and sea
Opening hours 11am-7pm
Finissage drinks today, Sunday 26 from 5 to 7pm
Latitude 22N, unit 16B, Man Foong Industrial Building, 7 Cheung Lee Street, Chai Wan
A black ink pen and paper always at hand, Gérard Henry quietly explores Hong Kong to
capture the essence of the city in his intricate, delicate, and highly detailed drawings.
Through his compositions he offers us a vision of the city that is thoughtful, romantic, and
poetic—timeless images, that will resonate with anyone who loves Hong Kong.

The tree suspended over Prince’s Terrace, 2003
Mid-Levels
Archival pigment print
22 x 15.85 cm
Edition of 20 + AP
“Hong Kong is engaged in a quiet and perpetual battle with the natural world—a world that quietly
attempts to take over the city and prevail over the built environment. Plants, tiny at first, sprout and
grow in the smallest of crevices within the sidewalks. Trees cling onto the sewage pipes running
down building facades finding nutrients from any minor leak. Old banyan trees cast their invasive
roots into the depth of the city as if seeking to uncover ancient history.”

At the forefront of high seas,

A network of scintillating islands.”

The tree suspended over Prince’s Terrace, 2003
Mid-Levels
Archival pigment print
22 x 15.85 cm
Edition of 20 + AP
“Hong Kong is engaged in a quiet and perpetual battle with the natural world—a world that quietly
attempts to take over the city and prevail over the built environment. Plants, tiny at first, sprout and
grow in the smallest of crevices within the sidewalks. Trees cling onto the sewage pipes running
down building facades finding nutrients from any minor leak. Old banyan trees cast their invasive
roots into the depth of the city as if seeking to uncover ancient history.”
